How to Lay Out Recessed Lighting Without Regretting It

Spacing rules, beam angles, color temperature, dimmer compatibility and the ceiling access questions that decide what recessed lighting costs.

Recessed lighting is one of the highest-impact and most frequently botched electrical projects. The failures are consistent: too many lights, wrong spacing, wrong color temperature, and dimmers that buzz.

Start with spacing, not fixture count

A workable starting rule: place lights about half the ceiling height away from walls, and about the full ceiling height apart from each other. On a standard eight-foot ceiling that means roughly four feet from the wall and eight feet between fixtures.

Then adjust for purpose. General ambient lighting can be spaced further apart. Task areas — kitchen counters, a desk, a reading chair — want a light placed deliberately over the task, not wherever the grid landed. Wall-washing artwork or cabinetry wants fixtures closer to the wall than the rule suggests, usually with an adjustable trim.

Beam angle matters more than wattage

A narrow beam creates pools of light and dark. A wide beam creates even, flat illumination. Most living spaces want a fairly wide beam with overlap between fixtures so you do not get scalloping on the walls. Accent applications want narrow.

Color temperature: pick one and commit

  • 2700K reads warm, like traditional incandescent. Living rooms, bedrooms.
  • 3000K is slightly crisper and the most common all-purpose choice. Kitchens, baths, open plans.
  • 3500K and above reads cool and clinical in a home. Reasonable in a garage, shop or laundry.

Mixing temperatures in one sight line is the most noticeable lighting mistake there is. If you are adding to existing fixtures, match them or replace them all. Also check the CRI — 90 or above renders colors and skin tones far better, and it is worth the small premium.

Dimming: where it usually goes wrong

Buzzing, flickering, limited dimming range and lights that drop out at low levels are almost always a compatibility problem between the LED driver and the dimmer, not a defect in either. Two rules solve most of it: use a dimmer the fixture manufacturer lists as compatible, and check the dimmer's minimum load, since a few small LED fixtures may not draw enough for a dimmer designed for incandescent loads.

Ceiling access decides the price

Open attic aboveEasiest and cheapest. Fixtures, wiring and boxes are all reachable from above.
Ceiling below a floorWiring has to be fished through joist bays from below. More labor, more access holes.
Lath and plasterFragile, dusty, and prone to cracking. Slower and needs more patching allowance.
Concrete or beamed ceilingsOften rules out recessed entirely; surface-mount or track is the realistic answer.

Wafer-style LED fixtures have changed the economics considerably — they need only a small hole and a junction box, so retrofits in finished ceilings are far less invasive than traditional cans.

Switching and zones

Decide before rough-in how you want the room controlled. A single switch for twelve lights is a blunt instrument. Splitting into two or three zones — general, task, accent — costs little at rough-in and is expensive to add later.

Mark it out first

Before anything gets cut, tape the fixture positions on the floor or mark the ceiling. Stand in the room. Look at where you actually sit, cook and read. Ten minutes here prevents the most common complaint about recessed lighting, which is that there are too many lights in the wrong places.
