Recessed Lighting Layout: How Many Lights and Where to Put Them

Recessed lighting is the most requested lighting installation we do, and layout matters more than fixture brand. Here is the approach our electricians use.

How many lights

Start with one 4-inch LED per 20–25 square feet for general lighting. A 12×15 living room lands around 6–8 lights. Kitchens with task areas need more.

Spacing

Divide ceiling height by two for spacing between lights, and place the first row half that distance from the wall. For an 8-foot ceiling: lights 4 feet apart, 2 feet off the walls.

Size and beam

4-inch fixtures suit most homes; 6-inch for high ceilings. Use adjustable gimbal trims to wash art or cabinetry.

Color temperature

2700K–3000K for living spaces, 3000K–3500K for kitchens and baths. Pick selectable-CCT fixtures if you want to change later.

Dimming

Always. Pair LED fixtures with a compatible dimmer or smart dimmer so the room works for movie night and cleaning day.
