Why the neutral matters

Smart switches need constant power to run their radio. Without a neutral, there is no return path when the light is off.

Option 1: No-neutral smart switches

Lutron Caséta and some Zigbee/Z-Wave switches are designed to work without a neutral. They are reliable and the fastest fix.

Option 2: Add a neutral

If the switch loop originates at a fixture box with a neutral present, we can often pull a new cable to the switch. This opens up any smart switch on the market.

Option 3: Smart relay in the fixture box

An in-box relay module (Shelly, Aeotec) makes the existing switch smart without changing the wall device.
