Modern homes are full of devices with sensitive switching power supplies: heat pumps with inverter drives, LED lighting, induction cooktops, EV chargers, networking gear, and every appliance with a circuit board in it. All of them are more surge-sensitive than the equipment they replaced.
Where surges actually come from
Lightning gets the attention, but the majority of damaging surges are generated inside the house or on the local distribution network: motors and compressors switching off, utility switching operations, capacitor bank operations, and power restoration after an outage. These are smaller than a lightning strike and far more frequent, and cumulative exposure is what degrades electronics over years.
What a Type 2 panel-mounted device does
A whole house surge protective device installs at or in the panel and clamps voltage on the incoming service, diverting excess energy to ground. It handles the large events — the ones that arrive from outside and would otherwise reach every circuit at once. It is the foundation of any real protection strategy.
What it does not do
- It does not stop a direct lightning strike to the structure. Nothing at panel level does.
- It does not protect against surges generated downstream of it, by a motor on the same branch circuit as your computer.
- It does not last forever. The internal components degrade with every event absorbed, which is why quality units have status indicators.
- It does not filter or condition power. Voltage sags and harmonics are different problems.
Why layering is the standard recommendation
The panel device takes the big hits. Point-of-use protection at the equipment handles the residual let-through voltage and the locally generated surges. A good layered setup:
- Type 2 device at the panel for the whole service.
- Quality point-of-use protectors at the entertainment system, home office, networking equipment and any expensive appliance with electronics.
- Data line protection where coax or ethernet enters the building, since surges travel on signal cables too.
Note that a five dollar power strip with an on/off switch is not surge protection. Look for a listed surge protective device with a stated joule rating and a protection indicator light.
What installation involves
A Type 2 device is wired into the panel on a dedicated two-pole breaker, kept on short leads because lead length reduces effectiveness. It is a short job on an accessible panel. If the panel is full, a slot has to be freed or the device is installed externally adjacent to the panel. Either way this is panel work, and it pairs naturally with a panel upgrade if one is already planned.
Is it worth it?
Add up what is plugged in. In a house with a heat pump, an EV charger, a smart panel, LED lighting throughout and a home office, the replacement cost of surge-sensitive equipment runs well into five figures. Panel-level protection is a small fraction of one appliance.
