A breaker that trips is a breaker doing its job. The question is what it is protecting you from. There are four answers, and they call for completely different fixes.
1. Overload
The most common by far. The circuit is carrying more current than its rating for long enough that the breaker's thermal element gives up. Classic signature: it trips when you run two specific things at once — microwave and toaster, space heater and hair dryer, vacuum and window AC.
The fix is a dedicated circuit for the high-draw appliance, not a bigger breaker. Upsizing a breaker on existing wire removes the protection and leaves the wire to overheat instead. This is the single most dangerous DIY electrical shortcut.
2. Short circuit
A hot conductor touching a neutral or a ground directly. The trip is instant and often accompanied by a bang, a flash or a smell. Common causes: a damaged cord, a screw driven through a cable, a rodent-chewed conductor, or a failed appliance.
The fix is finding and repairing the fault. Repeatedly resetting into a short is how you turn an electrical problem into a fire.
3. Ground fault
Current leaking to ground, usually through moisture or a failing appliance. If a GFCI device or breaker is what trips, this is the likely cause. Bathrooms, kitchens, garages, patios and pools are where it shows up.
The fix is isolating which device or appliance leaks. Unplug everything on the circuit, reset, then reintroduce loads one at a time.
4. Arc fault
An AFCI breaker detects the signature of arcing — a loose connection, a damaged cable, a stapled-through wire. These are the trips that feel mysterious because nothing was running unusually. They are also the ones most worth taking seriously, because arcing is the mechanism behind most electrical fires.
The fix is locating the loose or damaged connection. Back-stabbed receptacles are a frequent culprit.
How to narrow it down yourself
- Note exactly what was running when it tripped. Write it down; patterns matter.
- Unplug everything on the circuit and reset the breaker. If it holds, the problem is a load. If it trips immediately with nothing plugged in, the problem is in the wiring.
- Reintroduce loads one at a time, giving each a few minutes.
- Check whether the breaker feels warm and whether it is a standard, GFCI or AFCI type. That tells an electrician a lot before they arrive.
When it is urgent
Call immediately, do not keep resetting, if any of these apply: the breaker will not reset at all, it feels hot, you smell burning or hot plastic, there is visible scorching at an outlet or the panel, or the trip is accompanied by a bang. Those are fault conditions, not overloads.
The thing never to do
Do not replace a tripping breaker with a higher-amperage one. The breaker is sized to the wire, not to your appliance. Changing it does not add capacity; it removes protection.
